If BrainEngine becomes abandonware, and they release the source code, I will happily volunteer to work on updates to the IDE.
First thing I would like to see is TFS and GitHub integration
I am starting to use Welkins Suite. Other options are cloud 9 (not free) or sublime with mavensmate
